Enneagram Type Five and Mercury Retrograde
Yesterday, I sat down and wrote a post about Enneagram Type Five and the current astrological phenomenon of Mercury Retrograde, which is an optical illusion wherein the planet appears to move backwards in its orbit. Retrograde periods of Mercury are notorious for coinciding with "trickster" events with communication, thinking and writing...subjects that come under Mercury's realm.
I was ambivalent about posting the article; after all I don't want to foster superstition and negative thinking. Yet my own experience has borne out the warnings about the Mercury retrograde phenomenon. And wasn't it tempting fate just a little bit to actually write about Mercury retrograde while it was happening? Shouldn't I wait until the retrograde period was safely over?
I wrote the article anyway. Then I clicked away from the screen for a moment to check a reference....and my article went "poof", in a little cloud of pixels. Gone.
Ah, that trickster Mercury! Got me.
In my Enneastrology theory, since Mercury is the Enneagram planet for Type Five, my hypothesis is that issues related to withdrawal, resultant communication problems, and feeling overwhelmed by perceived social demands for Type Five indiviuuals should become especially prominent during this time period of November 13 through December 3, when Mercury goes direct again. Of course the Thanksgiving Holiday would intensify some of the drama.
I would love to know what some of you Enneagram Type Fives might think of this, or those of you who live or work closely with a Five. What are your observations?
When the retrograde period is over, it may be easier to gain perspective of the lessons brought up from the unconscious while Mercury is retrograde. Nevertheless I'll mention it now since it is the non-rational part of Mercury that is currently active, and I'd like to welcome the intuitive insights that might come--even if it means dealing with the humbling, knuckle-rapping form of the Trickster!
