Welcome!

Welcome to Enneagram Planet, where the Enneagram Personality type meets Astrology. My name is Andrea Meek Winchester, and I am the originator of "Enneastrology", my theory which correlates the nine Enneagram personality types with the symbols of the astrological birth chart. Here is where I hope to share some of my ideas and inspire further research into the mystery of personality and spirituality.

If you are new, the best place to start is by reading my articles listed below.

Odd Planet Out

I have said in a previous article that the Enneagram Planet tends to be the one which is "least integrated" in the astrological birth chart. What does this mean in plain English? In order to answer that question, one does need to understand some very basic ideas of astrology.

Have you ever known someone who did NOT resemble their astrological birth sign description at all? For example, maybe they were a Libra....supposedly a very fair minded, rational and relationship oriented sign. Yet the individual in question may have been brash, headstrong, opinionated and competetive, like an Aries. Upon further investigation, the birth chart shows the Sun in Libra...and the Moon, Mars and Jupiter in Aries. No wonder they act like an Aries; it is the dominant expression of their energies when the whole chart is considered.

The birth chart shows the true complexity of an individual, composed of many different drives and needs--more like a "committee" than a singular type of person. In fact one glance at a birth chart will show if a person is highly complex, with planets scattered all over the chart, or more easily understood with a few clusters of planets showing definate areas of focus and clear personal preferences.

In the symbolism of astrology, the geometric positions of the planets relative to one another, called "aspects", indicates whether the two parts of self (symbolized by the planets) are in easily harmonized styles of operation, or in contrasting, or conflicting styles of expression. The sextile and trine angles usually connect planets in the same or harmonious element (air with fire, water with earth), whereas the squares and oppositions indicate contrasting elements or a position of polar opposition in the chart.

If a planet is in square or opposition to many other planets in the chart, --or even completely unaspected or isolated--it shows that it is "odd man out", that is, different and in contrast to the rest of the birth chart. This means it will be more challenging for the individual to live out the energies of that planet in a graceful and balanced way. For example, if you are right handed and are suddenly called upon to use your left hand to do something, you feel awkward, clumsy, less sure of yourself. You tend to over do, or under-perform, in that area. In a similar manner, the "least integrated planet" begins to act like the negative Enneagram personality type it pertains to.

There are other ways for a planet to become "odd man out". The birth chart is divided into twelve houses, each representing a different area of life experience. A planet tucked away in the twelfth house, (that is the personal unconscious), or in the seventh house of relationships (thus likely to be projected on to other people) can also provide clues about which is the Enneagram Planet.

The goods news is, once the Enneagram Planet is identified, it is clear that one can learn to accept, integrate and express those energies more gracefully and completely.

Enneagram Type Five and Mercury Retrograde

Yesterday, I sat down and wrote a post about Enneagram Type Five and the current astrological phenomenon of Mercury Retrograde, which is an optical illusion wherein the planet appears to move backwards in its orbit. Retrograde periods of Mercury are notorious for coinciding with "trickster" events with communication, thinking and writing...subjects that come under Mercury's realm.

I was ambivalent about posting the article; after all I don't want to foster superstition and negative thinking. Yet my own experience has borne out the warnings about the Mercury retrograde phenomenon. And wasn't it tempting fate just a little bit to actually write about Mercury retrograde while it was happening? Shouldn't I wait until the retrograde period was safely over?

I wrote the article anyway. Then I clicked away from the screen for a moment to check a reference....and my article went "poof", in a little cloud of pixels. Gone.

Ah, that trickster Mercury! Got me.

In my Enneastrology theory, since Mercury is the Enneagram planet for Type Five, my hypothesis is that issues related to withdrawal, resultant communication problems, and feeling overwhelmed by perceived social demands for Type Five indiviuuals should become especially prominent during this time period of November 13 through December 3, when Mercury goes direct again. Of course the Thanksgiving Holiday would intensify some of the drama.

I would love to know what some of you Enneagram Type Fives might think of this, or those of you who live or work closely with a Five. What are your observations?

When the retrograde period is over, it may be easier to gain perspective of the lessons brought up from the unconscious while Mercury is retrograde. Nevertheless I'll mention it now since it is the non-rational part of Mercury that is currently active, and I'd like to welcome the intuitive insights that might come--even if it means dealing with the humbling, knuckle-rapping form of the Trickster!

Shoot me an email or leave a comment and let me know! Thanks.

Consultations and Workshops

Do you have questions about your own astrological birth chart, Enneagram type discernment, or both? I am available for private consultation, written chart analysis, or group teaching as time permits. Consultations may focus on either astrology, Enneagram or both. Previous knowledge of either system is helpful but not required. Please email me for more information.

The Enneastrology Diagram

Enneasdiagram

The Enneastrology diagram resembles the traditional nine pointed star of the Enneagram, with a crucial difference: Where normally the numbers one through nine appear at each point (each number signifying a different Type), I have placed the astrological glyph for the Enneagram Planet for that type. The archetypal symbolism and mythology of this planet bears special relevance for that Type, and will invariably be highlighted in the birth chart of the individual of that Type.

For example: If an individual is a Type One, the planet Mars will symbolize the issues around anger and will be highlighted in the birth chart. (I will discuss how the planet is highlighted in a subsequent post).

Another example: The Type Two individual is symbolized by the Moon, it's symbolism relating to nurturing and personal needs, and the Moon will be highlighted in the birth chart.

The Nine Types and relevant Ennea Planets are described in the table below. As we shall see, the expression of the qualities symbolized by the Ennea Planet are problematic for the individual of that type. NOTE: The SUN symbolizes Essence, is not an Enneagram Planet, and thus it's glyph appears in the center of the Enneastrology diagram.

Determining Type

Can one determine Enneagram type through astrological birth chart analysis alone? While the natal chart can provide potent clues as to type, I do not think it can be used to "diagnose" type at this time--nor is that necessarily desireable. After all, the introspection required in discerning type is more important as a process for personal growth, than is coming up with an "answer" per se. Determining Type is not the goal of the work, but simply a potent tool for the real work: Liberating the individual from compulsive reactions, so that one may live out of the True Self, or "Essence". The work is profoundly spiritual.

Traditionally, discerning Enneagram type has been a process guided by someone well versed in the system as a whole. It is only recently that respected Enneagram teachers have offered self-assesssment tools and questionnaires (some available through the links on this site) for the seeker.

I am still very cautious, even reluctant, to recommend such tools without the additional insight of a teacher trained in type discernment. This is more true for the Enneagram than for any other personality system, for the Enneagram is designed to identify material that gets beyond the idealized self-image, and to expose the unconscious (and unflattering) core motivations of the personality. Self assessment tools are ultimately only as effective as the ability of the user to correctly identify their own unconscious drives and motivations. It requires self awareness and humility.

Both Enneagram and astrology teach type through lists of traits or characteristics belonging to a given type or sign. In my own theory of Enneastrology, I note specific chart factors that are correlated with a given type. For example, a Moon in hard aspect to Saturn is likely to show the personality traits of Ennea Type Two. A Mars that is completely unaspected or otherwise isolated in the birth chart signifies traits of Type One. But what if a birth chart holds both those chart factors? Is the individual a type Two or a One? Indeed it is common for a chart to hold factors delineating more than one type. Clearly more detective work is needed to determine how these chart factors are actually experienced and lived out, in order to discern which one is the core type. Always, dilaogue is the preferred mode of operation.

It would be nice if type could be determined simply through astrological chart analysis. Maybe some day it will be possible. Nevertheless it is my hope that Enneastrology will contribute toward a deepened appreciation of both traditional Enneagram and Astrology teachings, and what these two great traditions have to offer one another.

Why Enneagram Planets?

Most people think of the zodiac first when they think of astrology. The zodiac refers to the twelve astrological constellations such as Aries, Taurus, Gemini and the rest. Most people know their "Sun Sign", which is the sign the Sun was in on the day of their birth.

Enneastrology does NOT start with the zodiac. Instead, the focus is on the symbols of the Planets, and the ACTION which they represent, for it is this action which generates the characteristic behaviors and compulsions of the nine Enneagram personality types. The best way to make this distinction is to remember the following:

A planet is a verb; an astrological sign is an adjective.

Thus: The planets are symbols of a specific kind of ACTION within the psyche or personality. The astrological sign of that planet will describe the style, or way that the action is carried out.

A very brief key to the actions of the planets is as follows:

Sun: creating an Identity or Soul connection
Moon: nurturing and security
Mercury: thinking and communicating
Mars: asserting and defending the ego
Venus: pleasure and expressing values
Jupiter: learning and adding to the self through experience
Saturn: self management and discipline
Uranus: creativity and autonomy
Neptune: merging with the collective ideal
Pluto: transformation, and personal power

It is my observation that the planetary energy which is "least integrated" in the birth chart, or most difficult to express, that becomes the "Enneagram Planet", and which creates the habit patterns and compulsions known as the Enneagram personality type.

Determining which planet is the Enneagram Planet for an individual is a complex art in itself, and integrating that planetary energy productively is the spiritual work of Enneastrology.

Biographical statement

I have had a lifelong fascination with spiritual formation and the illusive mask that our soul wears, which we call the "personality."

In 1981 I received my Masters in Divinity degree from Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, CA.

I was ordained elder in the United Methodist Church in 1983, and served the church as associate pastor at Walnut Creek United Methodist Church, and then First UMC in Sacramento CA, for a total of ten years in pastoral ministry.

While a pastor, I became a certified administrator of the Meyers-Brigggs Temperament Indicator, and used the MBTI as a tool for leadership development and in pastoral counseling.

In the mid 1980s I continued to study spiritual formation, and my spiritual director, Gerry Hair S.J., introduced me to the Enneagram.

In 1991 I left pastoral ministry in order to spend more time with my young family and to continue to specialize in spiritual formation beyond the local church setting. During this time I led retreats, taught classes, counseled individuals and studied with others, including a class from noted Enneagram teacher Helen Palmer.

Also during the early 1990s, along with Gerry Hair, S.J., and Jim Neafsey, S.J., I co-founded the Anamchara Spirituality Center in Sacramento, CA, where we led a nine month training program in spiritual companionship for several years. We used the Enneagram extensively in our training.

Privately I renewed an old interest in astrology, and began to see how the symbols of astrology related to the personality types of the Enneagram. Gradually I formed my own comprehensive theory, which I call Enneastrology.

In 2001 the respected international astrology journal, The Mountain Astrologer, published a three part series of articles in which I shared my findings publicly for the first time.

My goal as the founder of Enneastrology is to share my ideas and stimulate further research into the ways that Enneagram personality type is reflected in the astrological birth chart, so that individuals may waken from the dream of personality into the truth of Spirit.
