The National Uniformity for Food Act, HR 4167, was just passed behind our backs to remove over 200 food safety and public health protection measures. That's right, it's a law written to make us more vulnerable to industrial poisons. Under the guise of making food labeling simpler for the consumer (read: food industry), local States are now prohibited from warning the consumer about pesticides, chemicals, additives, or other toxins in their food. You can read more about it in Molly Ivins article, Special Favors for Special Interests.
As I see it, the only way to respond is to refuse to purchase any foods that are likely to be adulterated. Sadly, this new legislation assures that any food can be suspect. Grow your own food using environmentally friendly practices, buy organic, and avoid processsed foods.
I also recommend a letter writing campaign to elected officials or your local newspaper, letting them know how you feel.
Wow!! Thanks for the heads up. I've got to look into this some more.
